acontecimento.

ENG

Arquivo Bruto (Raw Archive) revisits the records of the performance Amálgama (2023), transforming images produced during the live event into photographs that come to exist independently. Situated between document and creation, the records are once again traversed by the body, clothing and excess, opening up further possibilities for interpreting what took place during the performance.

The exhibition forms part of a body of research which, this year, marks its 20th anniversary in Tales Frey’s career and which sees clothing and performance as an ongoing field of inquiry. Throughout this journey, the artist has developed the notion of ‘performative garments’: garments that not only cover the body but destabilise it, alter its modes of movement and provoke sensations, creating junctions, hybridisations and forms that duplicate or multiply the body, bringing it closer to or distancing it from other bodies.

In Amálgama, this research engages with the logic of fast fashion and excessive consumption. Clothes accumulate on the body until the boundaries between person and garment become difficult to recognise. The body comes to bear the weight of what we produce, desire, buy and discard.

In this sense, the ‘archive’ is not merely memory or documentation. It is living matter, which can be cut out, displaced and transformed. And the ‘raw’ element lies both in the original record and in the very material that runs through the work: clothing, the body, excess, desire and that which remains after the event.
