Gabinete de Curiosidades – Testes, Erros e Outras Coisas
Curadoria de João Rolaça e Tiago Fróis

Um Gabinete de Curiosidades is a place of concentration of experiences, improbable combinations, of reunion and collection, of contemplation and of unknown. This Gabinete de Curiosidades ["Cabinet of Curiosities"] of Oficinas do Convento is the collection of traces of the projects occurred in 2018, but not only those. More than presenting the result of the various residences, concerts, graphic projects, installations and events, we observe the traces, prototypes, experiences and errors undertaken in the process of the making of these projects. We assemble pieces of a machine under construction, made of different materials and shapes, complementary colors and improvised collages. This configures a place and a time in movement, vaguely schizophrenic in the multiplicity, languages, technologies and objectives. In the atypical and asymmetric spaces of the Convento de S. Francisco, the Telheiro da Encosta do Castelo, the former public wash-houses and the Laboratório de Terra we find the plural, the multifaceted and the colorful, since all the projects are developed by different people and groups, sometimes local and nearby artists, or people coming from the other side of the world. It's in this mixture of experiences that everything is unified. It's in the frenzy of insatiable curiosity, in the will to explore possibilities, to see with other eyes and to feel in other ways that we seek a meaning to exist all together here. This exhibition is therefore a reflection of this Whole, of this machine moved with so many hands, of who is to explore, to experience and to share a process of discovery and improvisation. The work of Oficinas do Convento has always been done by a whole mix of artists, musicians, technicians, specialists from all areas and enthusiasts from others and focuses on providing opportunities and working conditions in these areas, offering not only a exhibition space, presentation and discussion of ideas but also a workshop where everything can be done.
